The value of bitcoin dropped 7 percent Monday to a two-and-a-half-month low of $7,599.
On the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp exchange, bitcoin has dropped from a peak of nearly $20,000 in December.
The coin last week had its worst performance since 2013, Reuters reports.
Lending to the latest drop were news reports that U.S. and U.K. banks were banning the purchase of bitcoin via credit card.
