Billy Long, former U.S. representative for Missouri, was grilled by senators in his confirmation hearing Tuesday after President Donald Trump nominated him to lead the IRS.
Long faced questions about his promotion of questionable tax credits and political contributions he has received, among other queries, The Associated Press reports. A vote has not yet been made on whether to confirm him to head the IRS.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, asked multiple times whether Long believed the IRS could take away a taxpayer’s tax-exempt status if directed by the president to do so.
“I’m going to follow the law,” Long said, noting he would "have to go to the lawyers" for assistance.
