Big data is a hot topic, but what is it? Data analytics is the science of examining raw data with the purpose of drawing conclusions about that information. What can all that data mean for a business?
Missouri State University’s Management Development Institute’s Big Data Dance forum aims to inform business owners.
Slated March 17 at The eFactory, 405 N. Jefferson Ave., planned topics are:
- Defining big data – background, capture, sources;
- Uses of big data – predictive analytics, product positioning, pricing, manufacturing and retailing;
- Analytics tools – software, hardware and training;
- Darker side of data – risk management, quantitative data analysis and cybersecurity;
- Really big data – crunching large terabytes with the right tools;
- Small, medium and large firms - accessibility to analytics information and tools; and
- Big data in the value chain – C-suite, information technology, finance, human resource performance, logistics, marketing and customer care.
The Big Data Dance forum will feature multiple breakout sessions and a keynote lunch speaker.

How to enter the European marketFor business owners situated squarely in the center of the United States, selling a product in Europe can seem daunting. The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce hopes to mitigate that fear through an international trade seminar dubbed, “Navigating the Waters of Doing Business in Europe.”
Slated March 10 at the chamber office, 202 John Q. Hammons Parkway, the full-day event features lawyers from Belgium, England, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Romania and Spain.
The session addresses cultural nuances to take into consideration in negotiations, labor and employment issues, navigating insolvency and bankruptcy issues in the EU, e-commerce and data privacy concerns, as well as pitfalls of mergers and acquisitions in Europe.

Small-business workshopThe U.S. Small Business Administration, Federal Deposit InsuranceCorp., Consumer Credit Counseling of the Ozarksand the Missouri Small Business Technology & Development Centerwill host a free small-business workshop March 12 at the Springfield-Greene County Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave.
Dubbed “Reaching Out to Small Businesses,” according to
SBTDC.com/MissouriState.edu, the event includes an expert panel on entrepreneurialopportunities, as well as advice and resources tostart and grow a business.
Building a business planHaving a business plan in place is essential for new and established business owners. Hosted by the SBTDC, the “Building the Ultimate Business Plan” seminar aims to help business owners form a strategy.
The seminar is slated March 11–12 in two evening sessions at The eFactory. Participants will learn how to utilize the Ultimate Business Planner software and companion workbook, a step-by-step approach. Topics include:
- How to research the feasibility;
- Sources for evaluating the industry, market and competition;
- Assembling a marketing plan/niche;
- How to develop basic financial projections for financing; and
- Successful writing techniques that appeal to lenders and investors.
