The proposed $9.4 billion acquisition of Browning-Ferris Industries by Allied Waste Industries will result in the divestiture of some of the merged company's assets in southwest Missouri.
A July 20 U.S. Department of Justice decision approving the deal requires the sale of part of the merged entity's operations in 18 metropolitan areas, including Joplin, Lamar and Springfield.
Allied Waste has its headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz., and is the third largest waste hauler in the nation. BFI is based in Houston, Texas, and is the second largest waste disposal company.
The divestiture sales are set to take place in markets where the two companies had significant overlap in service. Justice Department information said the divestitures will take place in six of the combined company's 10 largest markets.
