Better Business Bureau reports potential phone scam

Posted online
The Better Business Bureau of Southwest Missouri is receiving reports from multiple consumers who are getting phone calls from a company claiming to be able to lower customers' credit card interest rates, according to a BBB news release.

The company, which calls itself Card Holder Services, allegedly calls consumers with a recorded phone message telling customers to press a number on their phone to get more information about obtaining a lower rate.

Call recipients report that if they press the number, the representative attempts to collect their credit card number. If the consumer asks for more specific information about the company, the caller hangs up.

Customers have also reported that the phone number shown on caller ID is that of an adult entertainment phone service with a Georgia area code, according to the release.

BBB believes the company is using caller ID spoofing, which changes the phone number displayed on the recipient's caller ID to a phone number other than the caller's actual phone number. Legislation is currently being considered in Congress to make the practice illegal, according to the release, and could be signed later this year.

"If anyone calls and tries to obtain your credit card number or bank account or Social Security number, do not give it out,” said Judy Mills, president and CEO of BBB of Southwest Missouri, in the release. “If they are a trustworthy company they should be willing to send you information in writing prior to having to supply any identifying information.”

To be added to the Missouri No Call List, consumers can call the Missouri Attorney General at (866) 662-2551 or visit the Do Not Call List Web site.[[In-content Ad]]
