The Christmas season is a time for family, generosity and celebration. It can also be one of the most expensive times of the year. Between gifts, travel, meals, decorations and other holiday activities, expenses can add up quickly. With some planning, Missourians can enjoy the season without losing sight of their financial goals.
One of the best ways to manage holiday spending is to start with a budget. Before making purchases, determine how much you can comfortably afford to spend and make a list of expected expenses. Setting limits for gifts, food, travel and entertainment can help keep spending under control.
It is also important to be thoughtful when using credit. Credit cards can be convenient, but holiday purchases become more expensive when balances carry over and accumulate interest. Keeping track of purchases and having a plan to pay them off can help avoid beginning the new year with unnecessary debt.
Consumers should also take time to compare prices and consider whether a purchase is truly necessary. Holiday sales and special promotions can be tempting, but a discount does not always make something a good financial decision. Taking a little extra time before making a purchase can make a meaningful difference.
The holidays are also a good reminder that generosity does not have to be measured by how much we spend. Homemade gifts, shared experiences or simply spending time with family and friends can be just as meaningful as expensive presents.
Financial literacy is about making informed choices that support both today’s needs and tomorrow’s goals. My office’s Financial Literacy Portal, available at treasurer.mo.gov/financial-literacy, offers resources to help Missourians with budgeting, saving, credit and other personal finance topics.
As we celebrate Christmas and prepare for a new year, I encourage Missourians to enjoy the season while keeping their long-term financial well-being in mind. A little planning now can help make for a happier and more financially secure new year.
