BBB warns businesses of e-mail scam

Posted online
The Better Business Bureau of Southwest Missouri is warning businesses of an e-mail scam that falsely uses the BBB name to lure recipients into downloading computer viruses.

E-mails are being sent to local businesses from addresses that appear to be related to the BBB. The e-mails state that a complaint has been filed with the BBB against the business, and a link is provided to learn details of the complaint. When clicked, however, the link downloads a virus that uses the recipient’s address book to spread to other e-mail accounts.

The most recent round of attacks is coming from the e-mail address diputes@la.bbb.org. Previous attacks have come from operations@bbb.org and consumer-complaints@bbb.org.

The BBB has teamed with the Electronic Crimes Task Force to investigate the scam. Any businesses contacted by the false e-mail addresses are asked to contact the BBB at (417) 862-4222.[[In-content Ad]]
