Bass Pro Shops No. 14 crunched in last lap at Talladega

Posted online

Subbing for Bass Pro Shops' sponsored driver Tony Stewart, NASCAR youngster Austin Dillon made a move from his third position on the final lap Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway that sent his car airborne and seal a victory for Joplin-native Jamie McMurray.

The Sprint Cup Series Camping World RV Sales 500 was only the 23-year-old Dillon’s 12th career start and his first race at Talladega in Alabama, according to MotorSport.com.

“The guys told me to bring back either the steering wheel or the trophy. They got the steering wheel, but we were close to the trophy,” said Dillon, who ended up 26th in the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS.

“I was trying to help the 88 [Earnhardt] right there at the end. The 17 [Stenhouse] had a run, so I went low and then when I was coming back up he just hooked me. Wild ride.”

McMurray won the race under caution to score his seventh career Sprint Cup victory, his first of the season and his second at Talladega. Previously sponsored by Bass Pro Shops and Tracker Marine, McMurray won the 2010 Daytona 500 wearing the Springfield-based outdoor retailer’s logo.

The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule – the seventh race of the 10-race Chase – is the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 Oct. 27 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, according to MotorSport.com.
