Bass Pro Shops has ranked as the 99th largest private company in the U.S., according to Forbes' 28th annual list of the country's biggest private companies.

Based on data sources including voluntary disclosures by companies, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings, and estimates from Forbes researches and third-party sources, the annual list ranks private firms based on revenues. Only companies with at least $2 billion in revenues were considered for the list.

The Springfield-based outdoor retailer had revenues of $3.92 billion for its fiscal year that ended Dec. 30, 2011, and 18,250 employees, according to the list.

Bass Pro projects 120 million people will visit its 77 stores and Tracker Marine centers in the U.S. and Canada this year. According to Bass Pro, the Springfield Outdoor World store on South Campbell Avenue brings in more than 4 million annual visitors.

Forbes' top-ranking private company, Minneapolis-based Cargill, has roughly 140,000 employees and recorded revenues of $133.9 billion for its fiscal year that ended May 31.
