Bass Pro Shops has donated $100,000 to the Nature Conservancy in Missouri to support its Missouri Campaign for Conservation, pushing campaign funds to more than $23 million.
Larry Whiteley, Bass Pro manager of communications, confirmed the donation via e-mail.
"The Nature Conservancy is doing one of the best jobs of protecting most of our precious natural areas in the state," he said, adding that Bass Pro founder Johnny Morris is an honorary co-chairman of the campaign.
The Missouri Campaign for Conservation was started in October 2007 to protect the state's woodlands, fresh water and grasslands, with four goals in mind:
- To restore and protect Missouri's remaining tallgrass prairies;
- to work with private landowners to protect the health of the Current River and other streams in the Ozarks;
- to restore and maintain the floodplain habitat on the Upper Mississippi River; and
- to assist the Nature Convervancy's partners in Brazil and Belize in conserving their grasslands and forestlands.
The original fundraising goal for the project was $18 million.
Donors and partners have allowed the Nature Conservancy in Missouri to protect more than 145,000 acres of natural lands in the state since 1956, according to the release.
The Missouri chapter office for the Nature Conservancy is located in St. Louis. There are also satellite locations in Van Buren and Hatfield, according to its
Web site.
