The U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Oct. 20 released its updated deposit market share report through June 30. A historical look reflects the merger and acquisition activity in the Springfield metropolitan statistical area; half of the banks in the top 10 a decade ago are no longer operating in the market by the same name.

The FDIC also reported that despite widespread consolidation between 1994 and 2003 – when the number of commercial banks nationwide declined by 29 percent – bank branches increased 15 percent.
