Bank of England raises interest rates

The Bank of England raised interest rates above the emergency level set during the financial crisis.

Interest rates rose to 0.75 percent from 0.5 percent.

The bank's nine-member monetary policy committee voted unanimously for the increase.

In the United States, the Federal Reserve on Wednesday chose not to raise its key interest rate.
