The company’s net income for the quarter totaled $35.1 million, up 4.7 percent compared to the same period in 2007. Net income per diluted share for the quarter was 43 cents, up from 42 cents a year earlier.
“BancorpSouth performed well for the first quarter in a challenging economic environment,” Chairman and CEO Aubrey Patterson said in the report. “We produced double-digit growth in both net interest revenue and noninterest revenue, while achieving further improvement in operating efficiency.”
Net interest income increased 11.6 percent to $110.1 million, marking the third consecutive quarter of double-digit percentage growth.
Total assets as of March 31 increased 1.5 percent from a year earlier to $13.2 billion. Total deposits as of March 31 declined 5.4 percent to $10.1 billion.
Shares of BancorpSouth (NYSE: BXS) closed Monday at $24.18 and were trading down to $23.95 as of 9:35 a.m. The 52-week range is $19.01 to $26.50.
