Kevin Riley, associate professor of business administration at College of the Ozarks, received the 2002 Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. This is Riley's 10th year at C of O. He was one of 65 recipients of the award, which was presented by Gov. Bob Holden.|ret||ret||tab|
The SMSU Alumni Association honored eight outstanding alumni, staff and faculty members. Receiving the Award of Appreciation were Maurice E. Edwards, bursar emeritus and former secretary for the Board of Regents and the SMSU Foundation; Robert Scott, professor emeritus of music; Peggy Thomas, professor emeritus of health, physical education and recreation; and Mildred Wilcox, secretary emeritus. Marvin Looney, chancellor emeritus of the SMSU-West Plains campus, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Outstanding Young Alumni Award was presented to Robin Melton, a 1988 graduate and president of Environmental Works Inc. in Springfield. The Outstanding Alumni Award was presented to James E. Smith, a 1977 graduate of SMSU and chairman and CEO of Citizens Union State Bank of Clinton; and Brig. Gen. William A. An SMSU professor and seven students received honors in the fall issue of Print, a national magazine dedicated to graphic design professionals. The competition selected 200 winning designs from more than 5,000 entries worldwide. Honored in the competition were Cedomir Kostovic, professor of art and design; and Nickie Bowers and Eli Hall, Springfield; Jennifer Buso, Kansas City; Philip Cheaney, Arcadia; Jenny Hardie, Brookline; Ryan Jones, Raytown; and Laura Thompson, Hazelwood.|ret||ret||tab|

Ken Rutherford, assistant professor of political science at SMSU, presented two speeches at the Disabled Peoples' International Sixth World Assembly held in Sapporo, Japan. The assembly, held every four years, was attended by approximately 3,000 people from 108 countries. |ret||ret||tab|
Murlidhar Dharmadhikari, term research professor of fruit science at SMSU, and Kimberly Rey, assistant director of the Midwest Viticulture Center, received $12,250 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the project "Winemaking 101: An introduction to table wine making."|ret||ret||tab|
