Bartolomiej Sapeta, an intern architect for Butler, Rosenbury & Partners was named a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings.
Communications
The Vacation Channel Productions announced recent honors at the 2003 Aurora Awards, a national competition recognizing excellence in the film and video industry. TVCP was awarded the Platinum Best of Show Award in the medical category for a video produced for Skaggs Community Health Center in Branson. The video called, "Embracing the Challenge". TVCP also was awarded a Gold Aurora in the Public Relations category for a DVD produced for the College of the Ozarks. "An Education of the Head, Heart & Hands" was created for the college's public relations department.
Community
Queen City Sertoma Club honored Samuel Harris, its 2003 Man About Town Winner, with a $500 donation to the charity of his choice. Harris chose the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon as his charity.
Crafts
Waverly House Gifts & Gallery was nominated for the 2003 Top 100 Retailers of America Craft Awards sponsored by Niche magazine. More than 18,000 professional craft artists from throughout the United States and Canada were polled by Niche magazine. Criteria for selection include treating artist with courtesy and respect, paying on time, promoting and marketing American crafts, giving back time and energy to the craft community, and mentoring emerging artists. More than 1,000 galleries, retail stores and museum shops from the United States and Canada were nominated.
Education
Craig Dort, a heating, refrigeration and air conditioning student at Ozarks Technical Community College, placed seventh in the refrigeration category at the 2003 World Skills Competition in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Dort, who competed as a member of Team U.S.A., received a Diploma of Merit for earning more than 500 points on a 600-point scale. He is employed by Howell Commercial Refrigeration in Springfield.
Paul Durham, an assistant biology professor at Southwest Missouri State University, was awarded a four-year research grant to look into the causes and treatment therapies for temporamandibular joint disorders. He will have $209,400 in the first year of the grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in the Department of Health and Human Services.
Finance
Nadia Cavner, senior vice president of U.S. Bancorp, was nominated to serve on the American Bible Society's finance committee, which is based in New York.
Health care
The Missouri Hospital Association presented 2003 Excellence in Governance awards to six board members in honor of their contributions to the health care industry.
The awards were presented to Jerry Jones, board chairman at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler; Patricia A. Lorencz, PhD, board chair at Carondelet Health in Kansas City; Robert E. Swafford, trustee at Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond; Charles E. Thoele, board chair at St. John's Mercy Health Care in St. Louis; Jean Wankum, RN, board vice chair at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City; and David E. Wilhite, board president at St. John's Breech Regional Medical Center in Lebanon.
Law
Attorney Douglas S. Evans was elected chair of the Midwestern Regional Members Association of the Commercial Law League of America, an organization of collections, creditors' rights and bankruptcy professionals.
