The workshops included: Forensic Child Interviews, Volunteer Safety, Effec-tive CASA/DFS Collaboration, Drug Identification and Accurate Screening, New Start Up, and Addiction Panel.
The Evangel University department of social sciences has announced that Gregory Rublee and Maria Rost Rublee are the recipients of the 2001 Regius Award. The Regius Award was established to honor graduates of the department of social sciences who have demonstrated outstanding professional accomplishments.
The Evangel University Alumni Association presented Distinguished Ser-vice Awards to Dr. Eleanor "Ellie" Syler and Jimmie Headley for their exceptional dedication to the students and the entire campus.
Alumni of Greenwood Laboratory School were presented with awards at the 2001 homecoming. Jeff Wasson, class of 1991, received the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award; John W. Hammon Jr., MD, class of 1960 received the Outstand-ng Alumnus Award; Glenn Thomas, re-tired faculty member, received the Award of Appreciation; and Greenwood parents Dr. Robert and Peg Carolla received the Outstanding Friends of Greenwood Award.
Drury University music professor Carlyle Sharpe received the ASCAPlu$ Standard Award for his compositions from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
Dr. Carol Anne Costabile-Heming, associate professor of modern and classical languages from Southwest Missouri State University, has been awarded a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. During the one-year fellowship, Constabile-Heming will prepare the draft for a manuscript that will explore the role of censorship in the former German Demo-cratic Republic.
Dr. Heidi Perrault, professor of computer information systems at SMSU, was awarded $8,000 by the Missouri Depart-ment of Elementary and Secondary Edu-cation for her project titled "Summer Vocational Business Workshops." The funding was used to provide a workshop for business teachers of all grade levels in the southwest Missouri region.
Dr. Judith Martin, assistant professor of modern and classical languages at SMSU, presented her paper, "French and German Literary Women: Reconfiguring the Boundaries of Gender, Genre and Politics around 1800," at the American Comparative Literature Association conference in Boulder, Colo.
SMSU's Dr. David Ashley, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Larry Campbell, professor of mathematics, were awarded $9,000 by the Missouri Depart-ment of Elementary and Secondary Edu-cation. The grant funding supported meals for the second annual conference for the Missouri Pre-Service Mathematics Tea-chers.
Dr. Art Spisak, SMSU associate professor of modern and classical languages, presented his paper "Martial as Iambograph-er" at the meeting of the Classical Associ-ation of the Middle West and South.
Thirty Springfield high school students have been selected to participate in Lead-ership Springfield Academy Class XII. Students selected are: Steve Broekhoven, Greenwood Laboratory School; Summer Leigh Burgess and Brooke Finch, Christian Schools of Springfield; Brad Carpenter, Jesse Ring, Adam Saunders and Jeff Smith, Parkview High School; Isaac Cowart, Rebecca Hannah, Adam Kilpatrick, Stephanie Lipscomb, Brooke McDowell and Sara Pettit, Glendale High School; Kendall Crocker, Heather Hansen, Josh Jones and Justine Wood, Hillcrest High School; Ashley Dameron, Paul Ragan, Jamie Smith, and Katie Whitworth, Kickapoo High School; Jes-sica Massey, Ronald McCants, Virginia Rabe and Stacy Westerman, Central High School; Bryan Murray, New Covenant Academy; and Ben Pomerenke, Mark Ruzicka, Katie Skahan, and Jennifer Spicer, Springfield Catholic High School.
Webster University's Ozarks Regional Campus participated in the annual "Web-ster-Works-Worldwide" Community Ser-vice Day. Employees, students and faculty of Webster University worked at the Victim Center assisting with various projects.
Shawn Askinosie, co-founder and chairman of the board of Lost & Found, was recently honored by the Missouri Bar Association with the Thomas D. Cochran Community Service Award. The award is given to one Missouri lawyer whose service and professionalism have enhanced the community.
Webster University's Dr. Don Tosh was recognized for his excellence in teaching. Tosh received the Academic Academy of Excellence Award for the Kansas City region in recognition of his extraordinary commitment to quality education.
SMSU alumni were recognized at an awards presentation in the Plaster Student Union Ballroom Oct. 19. The Outstanding Young Alumni Award went to Dr. David Osborne; Outstanding Alumni Awards went to James B. Anderson and Terry W. Thompson; the Lifetime Achievement Award went to Paul J. Connery; Award of Appreciation honorees were Dr. Byrne Blackwood, Dr. Mary Alice Cantrell and Dr. Paul Redfearn Jr.
COPE Inc. of Lebanon has recently re-ceived a challenge grant of $100,000 from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation in Tulsa. The funding will be used to complete the agency's capital campaign to construct, furnish and equip a new shelter facility. Cope will receive the grant on the condition that the agency raises the balance needed for the total project from other contributors by July 1, 2002.
The Hawthorn Chapter of the Interna-tional Association of Administrative Pro-fessionals held a meeting to give its Executive of the Year 2001-2002 award to Jodie Adams, superintendent of recreation for the Springfield-Greene County Park Board. The featured speaker at the event was Kay Enlow, CPS/CAP who is serving her second term as international director of the southwest district.
The American Diabetes Association raised a record-breaking $125,000 from its America's Walk for Diabetes. More than 80 teams and individuals contributed to the event, along with top corporate teams from companies such as Aaron's Automotive, Cox Health Systems and BKD.
The Missouri Motor Carriers Associa-tion held its annual convention to elect its officers. During the convention, Glenon Walker, TCSI/Transland Inc., Springfield, was awarded the prestigious Frank G. Campbell Award for Outstanding Service and the Ursel G. Lewellen Scholarship was awarded to Theodore "Grant" Vanland-ingham, of Chillicothe.
Judge Todd Thornhill, of the Springfield Municipal Court has completed the "Computer Uses for Judges" course in Reno, Nev. During this course, Judge Thornhill became the 10th judge to complete the program for the certificate in Judicial Development for Special Court Trial Skills. He is the first judge from Missouri to be awarded this certificate.
The Missouri Beef Industry Council and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association sponsored the Beef Backer award to two Missouri restaurants. Mikayla's Grille at Millwood Golf Course in Ozark has won the southwest region for its beef menu items along with Timberline Steakhouse in Joplin which won the Best Beef Entree division. Both restaurants won prize packages worth more than $1,000.
