Southwest Baptist University students competed in the regional Association for Computing Machinery's international collegiate programming contest held at SMSU. Richard Woods, Joel Patton and Curtis Harrelson solved four of the seven problems in five hours, which qualified them for fourth place at SMSU and 14th in the mid-central region. Also, Jennifer Credille, Joe Wieschhaus and Charles Harrison ranked 13th at SMSU and 85th in the mid-central region.

Branson's four environmental health specialists have been certified as food safety specialists through the National Environmental Health Association. The certification is designed for individuals within the public and private sectors whose primary responsibility is the protection and safety of food.

Kathy Lang, president of the Springfield Association of Insurance and Financial Ad-visors, is serving in an advisory capacity on the Baker Chair of Insurance. The Baker Chair of Insurance promotes and conducts insurance research programs and contributes to raising additional funds for the endowment.

Dr. Penny Clayton, associate professor of business administration and accounting program coordinator of Drury University, received the 2001 Governor's Cup For Teaching in the state of Missouri. The award honors a professor's effective teaching and advising, service to the campus community, commitment to high standards of excellence and success in nurturing student achievement.

Gary Duncan, president and chief executive officer of Freeman Health System, was recently named a member of the VHA Mid-America board of directors. Duncan serves on the Ronald McDonald House of the Four States board of directors and is council president of the Missouri Hospital Association of the southwest district.

David Harrison received the Just Peace Bus-iness Award on behalf of Glenstone Block Com-pany. The award is presented yearly to one local business that has demonstrated a history of putting its employees and the community above its own agenda.

Steve Waddell of Wickman's Gardens was featured in PFD (Professional Floral Designer) magazine's November/December 2001 issue. Also, Wickman's floral designer Linda William-son successfully completed all phases of membership for the American Institute of Floral Designers.

Farnsworth Group was ranked as one of the nation's hot 100 design firms for 2001. The firm was ranked 49th on the Zweig Letter hot firm list. The list was based on a national survey of industry firms and is limited to United States-based firms that receive the majority of their revenue from architecture, engineering, planning, environmental consulting or allied disciplines.

The Greater Springfield Board of Realtors installed its 2002 officers and directors: Stacey Clem, president; Bob Fitzgerald, vice president; Chuck Livieri, second vice president; Twyla Hillme, secretary; Ken Schwab, treasurer; Donna Dinger, Jack Rhodes, Kirk Heyle, Scott Rose, Thomas Barnet, Alice Delcour, Jeanne McFall and Swanie Marsh, directors.

The SMSU Foundation elected the new officers for 2002. Grant W. Lawson was elected president and Jacquie A. Dowdy was elected vice president. W. Wayne Bischler, Gregory L. Curl, Christopher T. Fuldner, Jay R. Padgett and Richard A. Seagrave were elected to a three-year terms on the board of directors.

The Missouri Department of Education and Secondary Education recently awarded the Southwest Regional Professional Develop-ment Center $65,000 in funds to provide services for their Mathematics Institute and Missouri Math Academy.

Martin Rosenberg, SMSU art and design department head, received $9,000 from the Missouri Arts Council for his project "Explor-ation in Contemporary Art." The grant provides funds for exhibitions at the Art and Design Gallery.

Michael Conner, associate research professor at the SMSU Center for Archaeological Research, received a subcontract agreement of $61,294.95 for his project "Background Prehistoric and Historic Studies, Architectural Investigation and Phase I Archaeological Survey, Route 60 Repub-lic to Marionville." Conner's research is used to develop plans to improve highway conditions on Route 60 from Springfield to Marionville.

Jose Saenz, SMSU assistant research professor of fruit science, was awarded $27,000 from the Viticulture Consortium at Cornell Univer-sity for his project "Importation and Evaluation of Eastern European Hybrid Grapes for Adapt-ability to Midwestern and Eastern Conditions." Saenz's research involves evaluating the different types of varieties that have been imported and testing their adaptability to the midwest.

Ellen Fennick, lecturer in the SMSU School of Teacher Education, published her article "Re-sponsibilities and Preparation of Collaborative Teachers" in the 2001 Journal of Teacher Edu-cation and Special Education.

Ryan Giedd, SMSU department head of phy-sics and astronomy, received $88,737 from Brewer Science Inc. for his project "Research on Ion Beam Modified and Mixed Polymers."

Brian K. Asberry, Neale & Newman LLP, has recently been certified as a rule 17 mediator by the Missouri Bar Association. As a Rule 17 mediator, Asberry will be available for court appointed mediation in pending litigation as well as mediating management/labor or labor/labor disputes.

Stone Hill Winery, a family-owned company for 155 years, earned a record of 303 medals from 23 state, national and international wine competitions in 2001.

Brad R. Parrish, PE, of Springfield, Charles E. Powell, PE, of Ozark and Kevin C. Skibiski, PE, of Ozark attended the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers Winter Meeting in Jefferson City.

Anne Allman, professor of art at College of the Ozarks, received the 2001 Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Fishel Pools earned certified pool operator certification by the National Swimming Pool Foundation. Craig Fishel, owner; Ryan Fishel, retail store manager; Keith Vaughn, service and maintenance manager; and Darren Keifer, service and maintenance staff, earned the continuing education certification as part of the 2001 International Pool & Spa Expo.

The Aurora and Fordland Head Start Centers were recognized as one of Missouri's exemplary programs for children, joining seven other Head Start Centers which received accreditation over the past two years.
