Average commutes cost drivers $960 annually

The average commuter wasted 42 hours and $960 waiting in traffic last year, according to a recent study from Auto Insurance Center, an insurance information website.

Commuters in Washington, D.C., fared the worst. They had nearly double the traffic costs last year, spending an average of $1,834.

Four of the top 10 counties with the longest commutes are in New York.
