Quaker Oats is retiring the more than 130-year-old Aunt Jemima brand and logo in acknowledgement of its origins based on racial stereotypes.
The brand reportedly has ties to slaves. The origin and logo is based off the song "Old Aunt Jemima" from a minstrel show performer. The logo also was based on Nancy Green, who according to the company's website was a "storyteller, cook and missionary worker." The website doesn't mention she was born into slavery, CNN Business reports.
"As we work to make progress toward racial equality through several initiatives, we also must take a hard look at our portfolio of brands and ensure they reflect our values and meet our consumers' expectations," said officials with Quaker Oats, which is owned by PepsiCo.
