An audit released Tuesday by Missouri's state auditor gives St. Louis Recorder of Deeds Sharon Carpenter's office a performance rating of poor and criticizes the office for inappropriate use of funds.
The audit says round $10,000 was potentially inappropriately spent from the agency's preservation account. Funds from the account are, by law, only allowed to be used on records preservation and related technology.
However, the audit found the account funds were used on purchases such as $2,378 on rugs for the private offices of the recorder and deputy recorder. Other found inappropriate expenses were for food, entertainment, furniture and decorations.
