AT&T will start testing 5G this year

AT&T announced plans to field-test its 5G network in Austin, Texas, by year's end.

The announcement puts AT&T on pace with its largest rival.

Last year, Verizon officials said it would start rolling out its 5G service by 2017, years earlier than industry experts expected.

AT&T's 5G service is targeted to deliver speeds between 10 and 100 times faster than 4G.
