In April 2004, the company was pulled from the Dow 30 after 88 years because it no longer met size requirements. AT&T’s $16 billion merger with SBC Communications Inc., approved Nov. 18, created a company large enough to make the list again.
The “T” symbol replaces SBC in the Dow 30.
The decision to revive the symbol “reflects both the rich heritage of the combined enterprise as well as its commitment to lead the next major shift in communications technology,” company officials said in a news release.
American Bell first used the “T” symbol in 1888 on the Boston Stock Exchange, and AT&T Corp. adopted it in 1930.
The new AT&T has about 3.9 billion outstanding shares. Shares of company stock closed Nov. 18 at $20.35, compared to a 52-week range of $17.59 to $20.43.
