AT&T names St. Louis, KC as candidates for ultra-fast fiber network

Dallas-based AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) has named the St. Louis and Kansas City metropolitan areas as candidates where the company might build an ultra-fast fiber optic network called GigaPower.

In the St. Louis area, the city of St. Louis, Chesterfield, Edwardsville, Florissant and Granite City could get access to the service, which boasts speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. In the Kansas City metro, AT&T is consulting with city officials in Kansas City, Kansas City, Kan., Overland Park, Kan. Leawood, Kan., Shawnee, Kan., and Independence, according to the Kansas City Star.

The telecommunications company is already selling GigaPower in Austin, Texas.

On Monday, AT&T announced it was contemplating bringing the service to 21 markets before it added St. Louis to the list.
