AT&T doing away with two-year contracts

The last of four national wireless carriers announced in 2015 that as of this week it would stop offering new contracts to consumers.

Following competitors Verizon and Sprint, which did away with contracts earlier last year, and T- Mobile, which dropped its contract policy in 2013, the official end date for AT&T to stop offering new contracts is Jan. 8.

Instead, customers will have to sign up for device payment plan AT&T Next. The company said a majority of customers already were choosing that plan over signing two-year contracts.
