Atlanta Falcons' new stadium makes a spectacle of its roof

Posted online
File the Atlanta Falcons' new stadium under "everything old is new again."

Designed by Kansas City firm 360 Architecture, the $1.2 billion venue has a retractable roof inspired by the ceiling of the Pantheon in Rome, which has a circular opening to let in light. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, designers at 360 wanted to replicate that light as a spotlight on the Falcons' 50-yard-line logo.

So they designed a roof that opens and closes like a camera shutter. This gives the exterior the appearance of a "jagged pinwheel," according to Bloomberg, which is ringed with video screens broadcasting the game and has retractable glass walls at street level. The stadium is slated to open for the 2017 NFL season.
