Arkansas could be a model for expanding health care coverage to the uninsured in states that have rejected an expansion of the Medicaid system, according to The Atlantic.
With a legislature that is heavily controlled by Republicans, earlier this year Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat, secured a waiver that allows the state to use federal Medicaid money to buy private insurance for people who would have otherwise been eligible for Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.
Republican governors in three other states that have so far rejected Medicaid expansion are now said to be considering a similar strategy.
This year, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and other proponents of a Medicaid expansion in the Show-Me State were unsuccessful in their attempts to receive federal funds to grow the program.
