Ark. lawmakers need to write rules for Lt. Gov. Darr's impeachment

Arkansas legislators face a host of unknowns as they look to impeach Lt. Gov. Mark Darr for ethics violations. Chief among them is figuring out how best to oust the official.

Arkansas House Speaker Davy Carter told an Associated Press reporter that lawmakers would have to write the rules for the process as only a basic framework for impeaching an elected official is outlined in the state constitution and state law. Davy wants to establish a bipartisan committee to examine options for impeaching Darr.

Removing Darr from office became a priority of lawmakers after he acknowledged to the state’s Ethics Commission last week that he broke ethics and campaign laws 11 times since 2010. Darr has agreed to pay $11,000 in fines, but has said publicly that he has no plans to resign.
