Area public companies follow volatile Dow

Though it rebounded slightly yesterday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 635 points, or 5.5 percent, Aug. 8, the worst drop since late 2008. Effects on the stocks of area public companies and financial institutions varied across the board, according to Springfield Business Journal research.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. (Nasdaq: ORLY) closed Aug. 8 up 0.2 percent at $57.51 per share, after opening at $57.41. The company's stock was trading at $58.22 as of 9:32 a.m., compared to a 52-week range of $45.74 to $66.52.

Great Southern Bancorp. Inc. (Nasdaq: GSBC) closed at $17.43 Aug. 8, a 5.6 percent drop after opening that morning at $18.47. The company's shares were trading this morning at $17.87, compared to a 52-week range of $16.69 to $24.60.

Shares for Monett-based Jack Henry & Associates Inc. (Nasdaq: JKHY) closed Aug. 8 down 4.5 percent at $24.64, after opening at $25.79. Company shares were trading at $25.36 this morning, compared to a 52-week range of $23.34 to $34.17.

Carthage-based Leggett & Platt Inc. (NYSE: LEG) shares closed Aug. 8 at $17.87, falling 5.2 percent from $18.86. This morning, the company's shares were trading at $19, compared to a 52-week range of $17.80 to $26.95.

The share price for Joplin-based Empire District Electric Co. (NYSE: EDE) dropped 4.8 percent to close at $18.20 Aug. 8 after opening at $19.11. The company's shares were trading at $19.03 this morning, compared to a 52-week range of $18.01 to $23.26.

Kansas City-based UMB Financial Corp. (Nasdaq: UMBF), which operates two UMB Bank branches in Springfield, closed at $35.37, a 6.5 percent drop from $37.81 that morning. The company's shares were trading at $36.27 this morning, compared to a 52-week range of $31.77 to $45.81.

The share price of Tupelo, Miss.-based BancorpSouth Inc. (NYSE: BXS), the holding company for BancorpSouth Bank, fell 6.5 percent to $10.85 per share at closing time Aug. 8; it opened at $11.60. The company's shares were trading this morning at $10.72, compared to a 52-week range of $10.35 to $16.75.

Regions Financial Corp. (NYSE: RF), the Birmingham, Ala.-based holding company for Regions Bank, closed Aug. 8 down 9.4 percent at $4.41 per share, compared to $4.87 per share when the market opened. Shares were trading at $4.38 this morning, compared to a 52-week range of $4.25 to $8.09.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Aug. 9 at 11,239.77, up nearly 430 points.[[In-content Ad]]
