Architect Sam Winn dies at 78

Sam Winn, pictured in 2000, had a 52-year career in architecture.

Sam Winn, who had a five-decade career in the local architecture industry, died March 26. He was 78.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. April 1 at King’s Way United Methodist Church, according to his obituary posted to GormanScharpf.com.

Winn spent 42 years of his 52-year career leading Sam A. Winn & Associates Architects PC, according to the obituary. Missouri secretary of state records show the company was dissolved in 2019, and a phone number listed for the firm online is no longer active.

Sam A. Winn & Associates Architects' clients over the years included Bass Pro Shops, Citizens Memorial Hospital, CoxHealth and Wil Fischer Cos., according to the obituary.

"We were the architects for Bass Pro when they moved to South Campbell [Avenue]," Winn told Springfield Business Journal in 2000. "We designed Hemingway's restaurant, the aquariums and fountains, and the south end of the building where the showroom is located, and the principal location of corporate offices and distribution."

Winn first worked in the industry at Joe Amspacher & Associates. The firm transitioned to Winn, Wright & Scott when he and partners Harold Wright and Richard Scott purchased the business, and it later made the name change to his namesake company, according to the obituary.
