Apple WWDC: Here's what everyone's talking about

Posted online
Apple Inc.’s much anticipated summer World Wide Developer Conference introduced a bevy of operating upgrades, but little in the way of new or innovative products.

The biggest announcement during yesterday’s conference had been hinted at for some time – a new music service. In this case, simply Apple Music. Similar to services such as Spotify, the upgrade to iTunes will be free for the first three months, then $9.99 a month.

In other announcements:

• Apple released its new operating system, OS X El Capitan. After long naming its operating systems after cats, the company seems to have moved on to California landmarks. If your iDevice can run OS X Yosemite, Mavericks or Mountain Lion, it’s compatible. Mac users can participate in the El Capitan beta program in July and download the final version for free from the Mac App Store this fall.

• Apple also introduced an upgraded mobile operating system. IOS 9 will have better battery life and will include improvements to Siri, its personal assistant. The beta will be released in July with a full public upgrade in the fall.

• Apple will soon surpass 1 million locations accepting Apple Pay, its mobile payment system, including the London Tube.

• The company introduced News, a news-reading app. It looks like a stylish competitor of Flipboard and several other mobile news apps.
