Apple reverses policy after Taylor Swift open letter

Posted online
There’s no more bad blood between Taylor Swift and Apple.

The pop princess butted heads with the tech giant over the weekend, when Apple (Nasdaq: APPL) said it wouldn’t pay artists for songs streamed on its new service, Music, during the three-month trial period.

Swift couldn’t just shake it off and penned an indictment titled, “Dear Apple, Love Taylor.”

“I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company,” she wrote. “This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field ... but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.”

Billboard reports Apple Senior Vice President of Internet Services and Software Eddy Cue later tweeted Apple would pay artists during the 90-day period, saying the Swift letter turned him around. Cue and Apple CEO Tim Cook called Swift to deliver the news.

"I let her know that we heard her concerns and are making the changes,” Cue told Billboard. “We have a long relationship with Taylor so I wanted her to hear directly from us."

Apple plans to launch Music later this year and won’t have a blank space when it comes to Swift’s songs.
