Apple Inc. said Thursday it will discontinue the iPod Shuffle and the iPod Nano, the last two music players in the company’s lineup that cannot play songs from its streaming service, Apple Music. An individual membership costs $9.99 a month.
The two devices are the direct descendants of the original iPod, introduced in 2001 by then-CEO Steve Jobs. They can only play songs that have been downloaded from iTunes or from physical media such as CDs.
Apple said the new iPod line would consist of two models for the iPod Touch. Essentially an iPhone without mobile data service, the Touch ranges in price from $199 to $299.
