Apple Inc. and Broadcom Inc. were ordered by a federal jury to pay $1.1 billion to the California Institute of Technology.
The jury decided the companies violated the school's patents on Wi-Fi transmissions. The university in 2016 filed suit claiming Broadcom Wi-Fi chips in Apple products used the proprietary technology in multiple products, including the iPhone.
Of the $1.1 billion, Apple must pay $838 million.
