What is the mission of Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 178?

It is our mission to serve, grow and protect the various markets in which we work in an effort to create and maintain an industry standard in which client, customer, community, employee, and employer are best served and are given opportunity and access to a future of success.

How is that mission supported?

Education. We create through education a work force that possesses a broader and more complete business knowledge of their chosen trade and the various markets in which they work and compete.

Trade-related training. We create through trade related instruction and education a highly knowledgeable work force possessing the mind and skills necessary to sustain a quality livelihood, while at the same time making a positive contribution within their chosen markets and industry as a whole.

Organizing. We create through various efforts and activities typically categorized under the umbrella of organizing an industry that is fair and just for all who wish to work at their chosen trade and those who wish to compete within their chosen markets.

Marketing. We create and carry out a marketing plan in which potential customers and/or clients are made aware of the qualifications, skills and strengths of both the Local Union 178 membership and the signatory employer.

How many members do you have, and who can join?

We have 400 members. To be eligible, individuals must be at least 18 years old. We are an equal opportunity employer.

What are the major issues for your members?

Health care costs. We are proactive in our search for ways to negotiate and control health care costs.

Why did Local 178 get involved with Salute to Construction?

Construction now employs over 6.9 million workers; there will be nearly 1 million new jobs created in the industry by 2012, an increase of 15 percent, and more jobs will continue to open up as the men and women of the baby boom generation retire. With a gross domestic product of more than $480 billion last year, construction is one of our nation’s vital industries. Despite this good news, there is a serious challenge in recruiting new workers. By being a part of Salute to Construction, together with area design and construction associations, we can raise the awareness of our industry and recruit more qualified workers.
