Anderson Engineering gets all-terrain drill rig

Posted online

Anderson Engineering Inc. recently purchased a new drill rig that enhances and expands the drilling capabilities offered by the employee-owned company.

The CME 550X all-terrain drill rig has several advantages over a truck-mounted drill rig.

"This piece of equipment can do virtually everything that a truck-mounted rig can do but a vast amount of things that truck-mounted rigs can't do," said Larry E. Davis, Anderson vice president and drilling services manager, adding that the all-terrain aspect is just one advantage.

"The specific reasons for the all-terrain vehicle is that it gives you the ability to access sites from rough, steep terrain to low, soft sites on its own," Davis said. "Many sites are just not accessible from a truck-mounted rig."

Among its features are an automatic hammer and a hydraulic break-out wrench.

Steven L. Brady, Anderson president, said the new equipment helps the company offer services that many engineering firms can't.

"It provides increased capability for us to provide a better service to our clients," Brady said. "It's something we've been wanting for a few years to get, and now it's happened."

Davis said the CME 550X outperforms usual rigs in many ways. "One unusual thing that it can do is it can drill at an angle," he said, which is helpful when the company needs to drill through ground and into a building's foundation to check for contaminants.

Anderson Engineering now has three truck-mounted rigs and one all-terrain rig.
