America's middle class is shrinking almost everywhere

America's middle class is on the decline.

Between 2000 and 2014, the share of middle-income households dropped in 90 percent of the nation's 229 metropolitan areas, according to a Pew Research Center report.

In the U.S., roughly 51 percent of Americans were in the middle class in 2014, down from 55 percent in 2000.

"The middle class is losing ground in communities all across the country," said Rakesh Kochhar, associate director for research at Pew. "In the North. In the South. In areas large and small."
