America’s infrastructure leaves much to be desired, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers, which recently gave the U.S. system a D+ grade.
Citing a backlog of overdue maintenance, a need for modernization and no reliable, long-term funding source, the association estimated America needs to spend $3.6 trillion on such infrastructure for energy, schools, roads, water pipelines, airports, railroads and bridges. The portion for surface transportation improvements accounts for $1.7 trillion.
ASCE conducts the infrastructure assessment every four years.
A critical component of funding is expected to go broke on May 31, unless Congress acts quickly. The federal Highway Trust Fund brings in $34 billion a year through the 18.4-cent per gallon fuel tax. A two-month extension of the fund has been approved in the House of Representatives.
