Americans, millennials turning away from religion

Posted online
Americans are turning away from religion, particularly millennials. The number of U.S. residents who say they believe in God, pray daily and attend church regularly is declining, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center.

Since 2007, the share of Americans who say they are “absolutely certain” that God exists has dropped to 63 percent from 71 percent. During that time, the percentage of adults who describe themselves as “religiously affiliated” also has declined to 77 percent from 83 percent.

Skepticism about religion is especially evident among millennials – the generation born between 1981 and 1996. About one-quarter of millennials attend church services on a weekly basis, compared with over half of U.S. adults born before 1946, and only about 40 percent say religion is important in their lives, compared with more than half of those who are older.
