Americans donated a record $373B to charity in 2015

Americans donated a record $373 billion to charitable organizations last year, besting 2014’s record of $359 billion by nearly 4 percent.
 
The annual Giving USA report, published by the The Giving Institute and the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, noted religious organizations received a little more than 32 percent of funding, totaling $120 billion.
 
Education-based charities came in second with $57.5 billion, an increase of 9 percent over the previous year, according to CNNMoney.
 
The report indicated that individual gifts far outweighed those made by estates, foundations and companies, tallying $264.6 billion, or 71 percent of the record total.
