American Royal shelves plan to raze, replace Kemper Arena

Kansas City officials are back at square one for a redevelopment plan at the city-owned Kemper Arena site.

According to the Kansas City Business Journal, the American Royal Association has shelved its $60 million plan to raze the arena and replace it with a smaller events center. The association had sought city support through a $30 million contribution and $1 million annual operating subsidies for 20 years.

According to a letter to a Kansas City councilman, the city should circulate a request for proposals from developers and organizations with plans for saving the arena.
