Ameren Missouri wants a coal ash landfill on the banks of the Missouri River and Franklin County officials are prepared to help the St. Louis-area utility provider overcome its legal challenges.
Two lawsuits from environmentalists are aimed at blocking the landfill, but if Ameren can receive a Franklin County zoning code change, it could end over five years of legal regulatory fights that have stalled construction.
Opponents of the project say the new zoning code won’t derail their lawsuits and accuse the county of passing the rules without a valid public hearing, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
