St. Louis-based electric utility Ameren is seeking to build two new natural gas power plants over the next decade.
Company officials said the business needs “new on-demand energy sources" as coal plants approach retirement.
Ameren has pledged to reach “net-zero” carbon emissions by 2045. Officials said "on-demand energy sources" such as gas plants would be needed in the push to boost reliability.
