Amazon's profits falter

Amazon reported third quarter net income of $2.1 billion, a 26% drop from $2.9 billion a year earlier.

Earnings per share of $4.23 were below analysts' predictions of $4.62 per share. Company officials pointed to increased expenses, including spending on its advertising sales force.

Revenue of $70 billion beat expectations of $68.8 billion.
