Amazon, Wal-Mart launch rival sales day

The sales battle between Amazon.com Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is escalating months before the beginning of the crucial holiday season.

Today, both companies are offering online discounts.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Amazon is celebrating its 20th anniversary with its event, dubbed Prime Day, offering its Prime members discounts. Wal-Mart followed suit, pointedly targeting Amazon by saying customers on its website would not need a subscription for its discounts. Prime members pay $99 a year for free two-day shipping and access to entertainment, such as TV shows.
