Amazon jaguar shot dead after Olympic torch ceremony

A jaguar featured Monday in an Olympic torch ceremony was shot dead after the event when it escaped from handlers.

According to Reuters, the tranquilized animal was killed at a zoo in Manaus, Brazil, when it approached a soldier.

The incident earned the ire of several animal rights groups and the environmental authority of the Amazonas state government, which deemed the jaguar’s use in the event illegal and is investigating the shooting.
