Alibaba files for an IPO: Why you should care

What would you get if you combined Amazon, eBay and PayPal and based the operation in eastern China? An e-commerce company capable of doing $5.8 billion in transactions in a single day.

Chinese tech company Alibaba filed Tuesday in the U.S. for its initial public offering. Bloomberg Businessweek reports China’s largest e-commerce site has an estimated post-IPO value range of $136 billion to $245 billion, making Alibaba more valuable than Facebook.

Big winners in the U.S. include Yahoo, which owns 22.6 percent of Alibaba. Yahoo is expected to sell less than half of its stake in the IPO, estimated to be worth about $10 billion.
