Private-sector hiring was up by 145,000 in March, according to payroll processing firm ADP's latest report.
That's down from a revised figure of 261,000 in February. Analysts were looking for 210,000 hires in March.
First-quarter hiring averaged 175,000 jobs a month, down from 397,000 a year earlier.
