Ad encouraging girls to build their future becomes online hit

A lot of online videos that might otherwise go unnoticed blow up after being seen by a few people who then share them with their friends, who share them with their friends. It’s not often that an advertisement, however, can pull down more than six million views in less than a week. But that’s what happened with an ad for GoldieBlox.

The startup toy company’s wares are designed to encourage girls to become engineers, an industry where only 25 percent of jobs are held by women.
 
According to the New York Times, the ad featuring young girls creating a steam-punkish contraption that would make Rube Goldberg beam with pride, has triggered a bigger conversation about the lack of women in technology fields.
