Acting city clerk officially named to position

Posted online
Springfield’s acting city clerk, Anita Cotter, has officially been given the nod to take over the position.

Cotter, who served as assistant director since 1996, succeeds Brenda Cirtin, who plans to formally retire in August from the role after 23 years, according to a news release. Cirtin in January laid out her transition plan, which included grooming Cotter for the position.

“Anita will continue the impressive legacy of great service provided to both the City Council and our citizens,” Springfield City Manager Greg Burris said in the release. “She has the energy and professionalism to continue to improve the operations of this vital function of the city.”

Cotter, whose appointment is effective May 17, will be paid a salary of $70,283. As city clerk, she’ll be responsible for supporting the mayor and council; recording the official minutes of council and several boards, commissions and committees; supervising office and clerical support functions; coordinating municipal elections with the county clerk; processing Sunshine Law requests; and keeping city records.

“I hope to improve the clerk’s office as an important link to residents, visitors and to municipal government,” Cotter said in the release.

Cotter holds municipal clerk certifications through the Missouri City Clerks and Finance Officers Association and the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, according to the release.
