Springfield's first Academy Sports & Outdoors, located at 610 W. El Camino Alto Drive, is set to open Sept. 16.

The roughly $7.8 million, 87,226-square-foot store is located within the 63-acre James River Commons at Campbell Avenue and James River Freeway, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

The store, which will employ roughly 150 people, will join James River Commons' anchor tenant Sam's Club. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. also has submitted plans for a third Neighborhood Market site within the development.

General contractor for Academy Sports was Comanche Contractors, with architect Seeberger Architecture. Engineers were BGA Engineers Inc., structural; and Lippe & Associates, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. All of the companies are based out of Texas, as is Academy Sports, which has its headquarters in Houston.

Academy Sports' Joplin location at 1717 Range Line Road severely damaged by the May 22 EF-5 tornado that hit the city. It is being rebuilt at the same location, according to information from the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.
